About
‘Little Bundles of Film’
Belgian violinist Lotte Remmen and French cellist Toby Kuhn form the award-winning duo Bipolar Bows in a cross-genre exploration of traditions, rhythms, techniques and sensitivity. Since releasing their first album Krunčhug in 2020 they have been invited to be artists-in-residence at Muziekcentrum Dranouter, and are working on a new project: Little Bundles of Film.
For this project they will collaborate with the Belgian Royal Film Archive (Cinematek) to create a show around a series of surrealist silent movies from the 1920s and 30s, with Belgian films like ‘Sur les bords de la camera’ (Henri Storck), ‘Monsieur Fantômas’ (Ernst Moerman) and ‘La Perle’ (Henri d'Ursel). A century apart, the musicians will attempt to resonate with the experimentative approach, the evident joy that these filmmakers had in the manipulation of their medium, by creating a musical counterpart to a collage of short and medium-length features.
Little Bundles of Film will be a live performance where Bipolar Bows will go on a journey of imagination and improvisation, through worlds both visual and musical, interpreting the raw emotion(s) of these early films for a modern audience. The show will also tie in with the band's second album ‘Little Bundles of Joy’, to be released in the winter of 2024 alongside the film premiere.
short promo text
After winning "Most Promising Band" at the Flanders Folk Awards, and on the cusp of releasing their second album, Bipolar Bows embark on a new journey in a new medium, that of live silent film music. In collaboration with Cinematek and Dranouter Centrum, Belgian violinist Lotte Remmen and French cellist Toby Kuhn have cobbled together a collection of caringly restored short- and medium-length surrealistic movies from the first third of the 20th century for a live performance.
With their trademark exploratory blend of folk and improv, classical and jazz with Balkan, Nordic and American flourishes, Bipolar Bows bring a new dimension to these six films by entering in resonance, a century apart, with the filmmakers' explorations of style, form and narrative. ‘Little Bundles of Film’ is at times funny, tragic, chaotic and weird, but the joy evident in all aspects of the show blows a breath of novelty in to these forgotten gems.
When: Dranouter Centrum on March 2nd, 2024
